The Irish Studies Program at New College of California in San Francisco offers an interdisciplinary curriculum focused on the history, literature, language and culture of Ireland and the Irish diaspora. The program is fundamentally shaped by the conviction that Irish Studies needs to engage with the worldwide dispersal of the Irish as an integral part of its project, as well as with the rich and varied histories of all parts of the island of Ireland. Within this broad focus, we work to emphasize the linkages which exist between Irish and other ethnic communities, the struggles for social justice in Northern Ireland, and the importance of understanding experience in both Ireland and the Irish diaspora in a global context. In addition to its intrinsic social, political and cultural importance, a B.A. or M.A. degree in Irish Studies is an important resouce which can lead to work in teaching, NGOs, non-profit work, cultural productions and exchanges, as well as advanced degree study.
